I can’t say enough how much I love photographing my bride’s in full dress prior to their wedding day.
I photographed Vanessa at her home a few weeks before her wedding. Her wedding was yesterday. The wedding was to be outside at her family’s Santa Barbara home. Beautiful rose gardens, swimming pool, horses, horse barn. We had no inclination to believe her wedding day would be anything but the usual sunny Santa Barbara.
You can imagine her disappointment early in the week with the impending news of rain. Suddenly her wedding coordinator Colette, from LaFete Weddings, had to make the decision and go into high gear to get tents rented and all the changes that go along with it.
The one thing that none of us stressed about was getting the photos of Vanessa around the property. An avid horse rider, she envisioned her photos around the property with the horses and barn, cowgirl boots, etc…
We did the pre wedding session to extend and enjoy the “bride experience”. Yesterday, we couldn’t believe how lucky we were that we had done it.
All though the day wasn’t exactly as originally planned because of the weather, everyone had a fabulous time. Hats off to LaFete Weddings for making it all seem as though it was planned from the start. A beautiful day, and a very happy bride.

Studio photography is not typical in Santa Barbara. It’s such a beautiful city, so many lovely locations. Why be inside? Well, for one, it’s unique. You rarely see it in photographer portfolios.
That’s what got me started. I wanted to offer something every other photographer in town wasn’t doing. And in the process my brides and I found out, it’s so much fun! What girl didn’t like to play dress up as a child? Well, some things never change. I’ve done four studio sessions in the month of May, which I’ll be posting after their actual weddings.

I demurely offered it as an add on, thinking it may not work. After all, you’ve got to get hair and make up done. (Hmmm, that’s easy, we schedule the hair and make up trials on the day we schedule the shoot.) We don’t have to worry about the dress getting dirty, because we’re inside. (Hmmm, that’s easy.)
I have had such a positive response. The women love it. Absolutely. It’s fun to be a bride. With all the planning and expense, it’s a way to extend the experience. And have fabulous photos to show for it.

Brooke was just married on May 22. I’ll be posting her wedding photos. All the portraits are outside and beautiful as you would expect in SB.

For our photo shoot, Mercedes Trump of Beautiful, 805-687-7433, wanted to play too. And ended up being our “stylist”. Using her own line of fascinators and jewelry, and accessories.
Mishay Salon styled Brooke’s hair. (Brooke herself is a stylist there)
Tomiko Taft was our make up artist.
Shannon from Effloresce, Inc. created the floral bouquet.

All were her team on her wedding day as well. Stay tuned to see which look she went with for her wedding.

I loved the way the cards came out, and I’m super excited for their wedding at the Montecito Country Club. The MCC is a great venue for events of all kinds, but for me, weddings in particular. You have indoor and outdoor options, ocean views, manicured lawns, fabulous succulents and trees. Just about any look a bride could want for her photos. Which makes me very happy. Not to mention their fantastic food and service. I’m delighted to have a few weddings booked their for 2011! beautiful skin, hair, lips, body. Basically, the total package. So of course, I wanted to get her in front of my camera. With Valentines Day coming up, I wanted to do a boudoir shoot.

Lindsey will be the first to tell you, it was super fun. The session made her feel sexy, glamourous, beautiful. She felt special.

You might think, well of course she felt that way, she is all of those things. But, come on girls. Not many women I have ever met or photographed don’t have something they aren’t particularly thrilled about in regard to their bodies.
And even Lindsey, was a little nervous how her naturally curvy body would photograph.

We did have some help. We got the right outfits for her body type at Purrmission Lingerie in Santa Barbara. Nico Cervantes, pitched in with some of his fabulous stylizing. And her hair and make up were done by Brianna Stewart.
We did the shoot in my studio, so I had control of the lighting, which by the way, can add or take away weight, on it’s own.

A teensy bit of photoshop for the dreamy effect and ta da~ Gorgeousness.

Thank you Lindsey for being willing to show women, they don’t have to be shy. Please share your experience with your brides to be. You were a delight to photograph and I sincerely appreciate you allowing me to show these photos.
Which, I think, show different sides of your personality and beauty.

I recently had the great pleasure to attend a traditional Christmas tea. My dear friend, event planner, Colette Lopez of La Fete Weddings has a yearly tradition with her daughter, Kaitlin, of creating a lovely tea during the Holiday season. I was invited to enjoy the warmth of good friends, spiced tea, delicious food, incredible design and bubbly champagne. I loved that the evening took place in her home. Colette used family china and heirlooms mixed with a few lovely rentals to complete the design. I have to say it never occurred to me to rent linens, and glassware, etc..

It wasn’t just a “style shoot”. It was real and we enjoyed it! After the photos of course.

On the photography end of things. Red is difficult to get right in photography. In a home, I had natural light coming through the windows and overhead lighting which cast another color. So it was up to me to use my “magic” lighting to get it right. It was a compliment to me when the very talented Laura Sangas of Cody Florals emailed me about how delighted she was that the colors are true.

Tracy of Lazaro Press & Design, created vintage invites that came in a sweet box filled with rose potpourri and antique jingle bells. Vintage fabric and lace completed the menu and place cards that matched Colette’s Grandmothers china.

These are some seriously talented women. Hope you enjoy as I did!

Style Unveiled also loved the story and published it on their blog. Take a look.

In the meantime, I’ve been busy shooting the most fabulous event designs for Nico Cervantes of Nico Designs. Nico is creating a coffee table book of love celebrations. Take a look at this fantastic
Moroccan Inspired rehearsal dinner on the rooftop of the Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara. Vibrant colors and textures, with the linens from LaTavola and incredible invites and paper designs from Tracy of Lazaro Press.
Yummy artisan chocolates by Jessica Foster. Gorgeous hair and make up by the very talented Luna Bella Make-up Art. Nico was the mastermind behind this creation. He was inspired after seeing
Sex and The City 2, the Abu Dhabi scene. He designed it all and created the floral pieces as well. The Tent Merchant set up the fabulous tent and great time was had by all!
Please click on this link to see the awe inspired event currently on the StyleUnveiled wedding blog.

I’ve been in business long enough to see trends and buzz words come and go. Through it all I’ve watched couples scratch their heads wondering, and being taught to ask questions they really don’t know what they mean. I’ve had couples ask me questions and when I give an answer they’ll admit, that they wouldn’t have even thought to ask the question and the answer didn’t really matter to them, but they were told by wedding magazines etc… to ask the particular question. They admit, they really don’t know what to ask of a photographer. And that’s when I assure them, they don’t need to know anything about photography to know whether they like an image or portfolio of images. That’s the beauty of photography, you can trust your instincts. You either like it or you don’t.

People ask me “What is your style”. I’ve had others label my style as everything from traditional (gives direction in regard to posing, etc.) to photojournalistic (captures exactly as is without any photographer intervention or direction. The two styles couldn’t be further from each other.

Without sounding snarky, I’d like to say, I’m a “wedding photographer”. In my experience a good wedding photographer wears many “style” hats. There is a time to capture events as they unfold naturally without any direction from me, and then there are “moments” like these posted, that would not have happened without me suggesting and directing.

At a time that didn’t interfere with the timeline of events I asked Addy and Tim to follow me and stand between the trees. Odd suggestion? Maybe, but they complied. Because they trusted me. Trust is essential between you and your photographer.
Once they were standing there, I gave them some direction. These are a couple of the images we created.

They enjoyed the few minutes of alone time, to reflect with each other. And we were able to create images, that even though they were suggested, were real.

Queensberry has come out with a new album called Musee. I’m working on a sample book as I have just got to have this in my hands. When couple’s are shopping for a photographer, often the first thing they want to know is “What do I charge”? I’m a consumer too, so I completely understand that you want to have a range, to know, is this photographer a possibility. I email off a price list when requested, but the fact of the matter is, you really have to see and touch these books to understand the investment. With the new swatches Queensberry sent they sent this lovely thought…
“I want it to be of leather. I want it to have that feeling of authority that the family bible has.”

“I’d like it if the leather had laugh lines, like an old couch, as if it had absorbed the wisdom and memories and conversations of the people who had sat in it…

Is that possible?

You can see these heirloom quality books at queensberry.com/musee

Melissa Musgrove Photography proudly and delightfully carries the custom line of Queensberry albums.

Call me to come see and feel, what true quality is all about.
