Portrait Photography is a very well known topic, but seldom less understood. Taking photographs of people is the easiest way to start into portrait photography. A person who is capable of pointing a camera and take a picture can certainly make a portrait.

What is Portrait?

A portrait is not a snapshot it deals more with person’s likeness. A good portrait expresses the person’s inner self by capturing it in different angels. A good portrait reveals the subject’s personality, attitude and other features that form the nature of the person. It always tries to tell us something about the subject.

Components of Good Portrait

There are many components associated with a good portrait; one of the most important components is the Control by the photographer. It depicts the subject and conveys information about the subject’s inner self. Controlled lighting, posing, and composition capture the essence of a good portrait. It deals with at least one element that reveals the subject’s personality and attitude.

Discovering Character Traits

A Portrait Photographer should be aimed at bringing out something about the character of the person they are photographing. He should always keep in mind that the topic of his photograph is his subject, and the photographer must look at bringing out the different facets of his subject’s character. Many subjects will open up immediately, but most of the times they take a while. So it becomes the photographer’s task to make the subject feel comfortable and relaxed during the session. A portrait photographer should be proficient in studying people and capturing there essence. This means studying the body language of the person, expressions, reactions and so on. He is the best judge for capturing a subject for the camera. This involves skill and understanding of human nature. Building rapport with the subject is most important as it makes the subject more at ease in your presence. Discussing the topic that interest the subject is the best way to start building a rapport. This helps in getting more relaxed and composed subject for the camera.

Taking Pictures

This topic deals with right timing and exposure of your subject. Before starting a shoot a photographer should try to be friendly with the subject by showing interest in their talk. Just getting started is enough for the subject to settle down. In other words they must be curious about people, people they had never met before, total strangers. The photographer should make sure that the subject positioned in a relative comfortable way and ready to shot. He must see best judgment in every case. No portrait session should be taken in rush. It takes the time for you as well as your subject. The photographer should take into consideration that the conversation should not be ceased at the time of shot. This helps in getting interesting and revealing expressions
